Clean discovery mechanics and a locked next step, but the rep never converted a single pain into a number — soft on quantification and economic-buyer rigor.
This is a hot-deal-weak-process call. The deal signals are genuinely strong: an internal champion (Dana) is already pushing for change and is frustrated with the status quo, and the buyer agreed to a concrete next meeting with that champion attending. But the process that should harden those signals is thin — every quantification opportunity (over-60 balance, six-month cost of inaction) died on a vague answer the rep accepted without a follow-up, and the economic buyer / approval path was never established. The risk is a deal that feels warm but has no quantified business case and no confirmed budget authority, the two things that stall warm deals at the finish line.
Pain quantified in $ or days
Stop accepting the first vague answer — peel for a number every time. The rep asked the right pain questions but folded the instant the buyer hedged. When the prospect said 'it's a problem, it's a lot to keep track of' [62s], the rep should have anchored and quantified: 'Totally fair that it's hard to track — let's ballpark it. Of everything outstanding, what dollar amount is sitting past 60 days right now, and how many hours a week is your team spending chasing it?' The same move applies at [182s] when the buyer said 'I don't know, hard to say' — offer a range to react to: 'Most teams your size tell me it's $40-60K tied up and a few hours a day; does that sound high or low for you?' One quantified number turns this from a friendly chat into a business case.
Thanks for hopping on. I figured we'd start with a quick agenda — I'll ask about your current AR process, then we can see if there's a fit. Does that work?
Sounds good, yeah.
So tell me about how you handle collections today.
It's mostly manual. My team chases invoices over email.
How much is sitting in over-60 right now?
Honestly it's a problem, it's a lot to keep track of.
Who else would be involved in a decision like this?
I'd loop in our controller, Dana.
Has Dana looked at tools like this before?
Yeah, Dana's been pushing for this. She's frustrated with the current process.
Walk me through the last time you bought finance software.
Uh, I think it was just me and finance.
If this stays manual another six months, what does that cost you?
I don't know, hard to say.
Let's lock Thursday at 2pm with you and Dana to review the over-60 breakdown.
